First record for the flora of Italy and lectotypification of the name Linum elegans (Linaceae)
2017
Linum elegans has been detected in calcareous rocky garrigues on the Gargano promontory (Apulia, SE-Italy), representing the first record for the Italian flora and the first one outside the Balkan Peninsula. The geographical disjunction may provide evidence for past amphi-Adriatic/amphi-Ionic terrestrial connections. The population found was ascribed to L. campanulatum in the past. As a consequence, a comparison between these two species is undertaken. Furthermore, the name L. elegans is here lectotypified on a specimen preserved at G, and the IUCN assessment of the species in Italy is briefly discussed.

Inequalities in undernutrition among Roma and non-Roma children in Western Balkans: an analysis of the determinants
2022
Childhood undernutrition affects physical and cognitive growth and is strongly associated with morbidity and mortality. Roma children in Western Balkans display to date incomparably higher levels of undernutrition, compared to non-Roma children. Employing logistic regression models, we explore the determinants of such dramatic differences using Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys carried out in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia in the period 2011-2013 and 2018-2020. Children’s age, number of children in the household, type of place of residence and age of the mother at birth are found be especially important factors. In particular, we find substantial differences …

2011
This article analyses the progress made and obstacles encountered by the process to bring Macedonia into the European Union. After studying the history of relations between Macedonia and the EU and the Union’s new strategies for enlargement with respect to the Balkans, the author specifically analyses the problems which have, to date, hampered the progress of Macedonia’s candidacy (one particularly important example being the dispute with Greece over its name), as well as its strengths, paying particular attention to the backing given by public opinion and numerous EU-related areas. Finally, the author reflects on the negative consequences that the current blockade could have for the stabil…
An assessment of regulation, education practices and socio-economic perceptions of non-native aquatic species in the Balkans
2021
Alongside climate change, the introduction of non- native species (NNS) is widely recognized as one of the main threats to aquatic biodiversity and human wellbeing. Non-native species and biodiversity are generally low priority issues on the political agendas of many countries, particularly in European countries outside the European Union (EU). The objectives and tasks of this study were to address the policy regulation, education level, education practices, and socioeconomic perceptions of NNS in the Balkans. A questionnaire based survey was conducted in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Turkey (Balkan EU candidate and potential candidate members), in Croatia…

The chapter addresses the following questions: how pragmatically EULEX has transformed itself reacting to operational needs in the field? Which is the framework of mobilization of informal networks, the source of their legitimacy and the ways they affect formal and international policies in high-inst…

Полско-българските отношения през 20-те години на XX век – преглед на избрани проблемиi
2020
In the article, the multi-faceted cooperation between Poland and Bulgaria in the 1920s in the political, economic and cultural spheres is presented based on Polish archival materials. After the end of the First World War, Bulgarians wanted more equal relations with Poland, because they wanted Poland to be an advocate of Bulgaria. The motto of Polish Balkan policy was, above all, cooperation with Romania in the event of a war threat from Soviet Russia (later USSR). In this context, political relations with Bulgaria had to become less important, whereas economic cooperation was focused on mutually advantageous trade exchange. The author of the article emphasizes the fact that during the perio…
